somewhere-nowhere

somewhere-nowhere is the collaborative practice of Harriet and Rob Fraser. Harriet’s main craft is writing, while Rob is a photographer: together their practice extends to include land art, film and participatory events. Their work explores connections between people and the natural world, offering inspiration and wonder as well as an invitation to engage in debate. It embraces complexity and multiple value systems, and enquires into practices and policies affecting land use and changing landscapes. The Frasers like to work alongside people who are experts by experience - including farmers, foresters, ecologists - and get involved in multi-disciplinary research projects. Walking is fundamental to their research, always slow, and always with plenty of time to pause; and often over a continuous series of days. somewhere-nowhere is grounded in the outdoors.

They share work through presentations, touring exhibitions, outdoor installation art, films and books, and run participatory events at festivals, in schools and universities. In the past decade they have worked across the UK with partners including National Park Authorities, Farmer Networks, National Trust, Forestry England, Woodland Trust and the Foundation for Common Land, and have lectured in the USA. They have recently founded the PLACE Collective within the Centre for National Parks and Protected Areas (at Cumbria University), to connect environmental artists with researchers, land users, NGOs and local communities.
